To keep the woodland as natural as possible we don’t label individual trees and we ask that visitors do not place their own plaques, labels, flowers, etc in the woodland. Each tree we plant should be seen as part of a natural woodland.

We’ve planted so many trees here that there isn’t any space to plant more. We hope to be able to plant here again in future years.

Mortimores Wood is a beautiful area of woodland owned by Chippenham Borough Lands Charity (CBLC) and managed by the Mortimores Wood Volunteers.

Their objectives are to manage and improve the conditions of the wood on behalf of CBLC and to manage the woodland to maximise the value to wildlife and to increase the diversity of indigenous flora and fauna within the confines and environs of the wood.

Their aim is to provide an area available to the inhabitants of Chippenham for the rest, relaxation and the enjoyment of wildlife, and also to provide an area that is useful for educational purposes, particularly for local schools.

Mortimores Wood lies just one mile from the centre of the busy town of Chippenham, providing a haven of tranquillity from the bustle of modern life.

It is a small area of Ancient woodland with a recorded history extending back over 800 years and it houses a diversity of plant and bird life only found in such old woodlands.

Mortimores Wood is both a designated County Wildlife Site and Local Nature Reserve.

The hazel planted at Mortimores Wood will be coppiced on a 8 year cycle, prolonging the life of the trees while enabling local woodworkers to harvest wood from the trees too.

LOCATION

The wood can be found approximately 1/4 mile down a tarmac track to the southern side of the A4 Pewsham Way, between the Webbington Road & Canal Road roundabouts. It is advisable to park in the widened area just before the first cattle grid. The wood is 150 yards south of the Sustrans route from Chippenham to Lacock.
