Meath Gardens Woodland

Tree Planting in Greater London at Meath Gardens Woodland

Meath Gardens Woodland is a 10 acre park in Bethnal Green, East London, that was created in 1890.

In 2005 a community association called Friends of Meath Gardens was formed to manage the park in collaboration with the council. The group are in the process of creating 3 woodland areas within the gardens, linked by 500 metres of native hedgerow.

IMPORTANT VISITOR INFOTake only photos. Leave only footsteps.

To keep the woodland as natural as possible we don’t label individual trees and we ask that visitors do not place their own plaques, labels, flowers, etc in the woodland. Each tree we plant should be seen as part of a natural woodland.

Before visiting this woodland, please read our Frequently Asked Questions page, which gives you helpful tips about your tree and visitor guidance.

The Friends Group, which comprises of over 200 volunteers, intends to plant up 3 woodland areas with native species and to protect them in collaboration with the council.

One area (known as "Walnut Woodland") is a 1 acre site dominated by young walnut trees. A second area (known as "Railway woodland") is around 1.5 acres and has a few sycamore and ash trees. The final area (known as "Bat woodland") has a plane tree, an ash tree and a few young saplings (oak, beech, maple, rowan, etc).

Over the last two years, these three areas are now "no-mow" areas and there has been an incredible regeneration of herbaceous plants on all three sites.

Planting these areas with young trees will help them become well developed woodlands in years to come.
