Knepp Wildland

Tree Planting in West Sussex at Knepp Wildland

Knepp is a 3,500 acre estate just south of Horsham, West Sussex. Since 2001, the land – once intensively farmed - has been devoted to a pioneering rewilding project.

* THIS WOODLAND IS Temporarily Full *
We’ve planted so many trees here that there isn’t any space to plant more. We hope to be able to plant here again in future years.
For the nearest alternative woodlands take a look at the Woodlands Locations Map.

IMPORTANT VISITOR INFOTake only photos. Leave only footsteps.

To keep the woodland as natural as possible we don’t label individual trees and we ask that visitors do not place their own plaques, labels, flowers, etc in the woodland. Each tree we plant should be seen as part of a natural woodland.

Before visiting this woodland, please read our Frequently Asked Questions page, which gives you helpful tips about your tree and visitor guidance.

The Bund

Since 2019 / 2020, EFORESTS have planted over 600 trees in The Bund area of Knepp Wildland, which runs parallel to the A24.

The trees will help improve the biodiversity and provide a haven for the local wildlife.

The species include Alder Buckthorn, Hazel, Holly, Hornbeam, Oak, Rowan, Small leaved Lime, Wild Cherry, Wild Service Tree, Yew.

From 2021 a public footpath is scheduled to be running through this area, from the A272 near the McDonald's, making it accessible to the public.

We ask any visitors not to venture off the public footpath for their own safety.

Along the River Adur

The River Adur runs through the estate and its banks are managed by the Ouse & Adur Rivers Trust and, from January 2019, EFORESTS has worked with them to plant over 1000 trees along the banks of the river.

The trees will help stabilise the river banks and provide much needed shaded to the fish in the river.

A variety of native species have been planted along the river including, Common Alder, Crack Willow, Downy Birch, Field Maple, Grey Willow, Hawthorn, and Hazel.

Access to the planting area is via the public footpath off Swallows Lane which leads up to the footbridge that spans the river.

As the trees have fencing around them to protect them from deer, the nearest visiting point is the public footpath / footbridge which is on the edge of the newly planted area. We ask any visitors not to venture off the public footpath for their own safety.
