Hems Down

Tree Planting in Devon at Hems Down

Hems Down is a 4.5 acres or former agricultural land, on the outskirts of Totnes, Devon. It is being converted to a woodland, with a mixture of native broadleaf tree species, and a meadow.

IMPORTANT VISITOR INFOTake only photos. Leave only footsteps.

To keep the woodland as natural as possible we don’t label individual trees and we ask that visitors do not place their own plaques, labels, flowers, etc in the woodland. Each tree we plant should be seen as part of a natural woodland.

Before visiting this woodland, please read our Frequently Asked Questions page, which gives you helpful tips about your tree and visitor guidance.

Hems Down has the River Hems running through it and also a public footpath (that goes over a small footbridge in the middle of the land). It is overlooked by Littlehempston church.

A mixture of woodland and meadow are being created in order to improve wildlife diversity and also to create a recreation area that is open to the public.

The new trees, dotted around the slopes, will soon grow out of the top of their protective, plastic shelters.
